Why should you start a blog?

I think everyone should have a blog, whether it is to make an additional income, to build a home based business or even just as a hobby. Today I want to answer the question, “Why should you start a blog?”

Here are the top five reasons why I think you should start blogging.

1. Sharing is caring.

Why should you have a blogIf you have a hobby or passion, chances are that you have experienced something along the way that will help someone else. Maybe you ran into a particular problem that is now vexing someone else. By writing a blog about your experience, you may help someone (or many someones) out.

Maybe you just want to share your daily life with friends and family. While you can share these things on social media such as Facebook or Twitter, they have their limitations. On your own blog you can create more user friendly image galleries and link your content in a fashion that is conducive to the way you want your viewers to see it.

2. The more you write the better you get at it

There is no reason not to be a good writer and often, becoming a better writer is in our own best interest. If you have a job where you have to communicate with people via electronic medium (email, chat, etc…) being a good writer is almost a requirement.

When you write your own blog, you will learn new techniques at writing and as time passes and your writing quality increases, all of your written communication will improve. The more you write, the better you will get at it, so the point you are trying to get across will become more clear and concise to everyone.

3. You can meet new people.

Make new friendsThis is maybe the best part for me. If you write a helpful blog and engage in the community you are helping, you are going to make friends. Why? Because you will get known for helping people.

The really great thing about this is that people can view your blog from anywhere in the world. You may make a friend in Germany or Ireland or Australia. Think about it. The world wide web does not know any boundaries (except for the maybe the great firewall of China or other countries that limit internet access to their citizens).

You could be chatting with one person from the U.S. in the morning then chatting with someone from India in the evening. It’s a really neat way to meet new people (your audience) from all over the world who share a common interest with you. You could be forging a new life long friendship.

As you research for your content, you could also find other bloggers just like you. If you start following them and engaging on their blog, you may find that they reciprocate.

4. It’s completely free.

Blogging does not cost you one red cent. There are tons of great places to blog for free, not the least of which is Wordpress which offers free hosting for personal blog sites.

There are a few other sites that offer free websites to blog on as well. My top pick is Wealthy Affiliate. They offer free hosting for up to two WordPress websites completely for free. There is also a lot of great free training on how to best use WordPress and how to write. And if you decide to start making money using your fancy new blog, they have you covered there as well with some other great training.

Well that’s a great segue into my next reason.

5. You can make a few extra dollars.

Earn money bloggingWhile blogging does not have to be a source of income, it certainly can be. If you are helping people in your blog or even simply writing about a hobby you are passionate about (what we call a niche in affiliate marketing), why not throw a few ads on your site. Or if you write a review of a product you use for your hobby, why not earn a commission on the sale if someone decides to purchase it based on your review?

Blogging can be a great source of revenue for you. You don’t have to believe me. If you do a google search for how to make money blogging you’ll come across all sorts of products and programs to kick you off. Just remember, a lot of them are complete and utter rubbish.

If you are interested in a revenue stream by simply writing a blog about something you are passionate about, I highly recommend you read my review of Wealthy Affiliate and sign up for a free account. It is a great place to 1) create your free blog and 2) find more information about how you can create an income stream through doing something you enjoy. The best part is that it is completely free to start.

There is, of course, a premium option, but you can go your own pace and you never have to upgrade to it if you don’t want. You can just stick with your free account if that is what you want.

Why should you start a blog? There are lots of reasons and these are just my top five reasons. I hope you have enjoyed reading it and as always, if you have a question or have another good reason to start a blog, I’d love to hear about it in the comments below. Remember, I’m here to help.

  1. Christian-
This points out a lot of great reasons why everyone should have a blog. And as you mentioned it costs them nothing if they start their blog through WA, so why not? Everyone needs a place to vent, talk about their hobby or even just earn some money. As a stay at home parent I can totally agree with all these things. You make it really obvious why this is such an easy decision. Great post!

    1. Thanks for the note! My wife and I have a blog that we work on together. She was a stay home mom for a while but now she’s volunteering a lot at one of our children’s schools and she is way busier than she used to be. And that’s really saying something if you’ve ever been a stay home parent.

Blogs are definately a great place to vent or even just to focus positive energy. If you’re posting about something you love, it can be a great outlet.

  2. great site. I have been very bored lately and have been looking for an outlet. I clicked your link at the bottom and build a website from so thanks a lot. Maybe you could check out my site. Email me if so. I recommend anyone who reads this try their own blog. Thanks again!

  3. Thanks Christian for a great article on the benefits of blogging. I run a blog-type website (I wouldn’t call it a blog per se) and truth be told, five months ago I would have thought there was no way that starting and running one was something I could ever do. Things have changed a lot since then. On top of making an income, I do indeed feel like I have realized other benefits — improved writing skills, building my network, etcetera. It’s a great opportunity that almost anyone can take advantage of.

  4. I was not good at all when I started blogging. English is my secondary language which makes it difficult for me to translate some of the words.

I have to work extra hard to get my articles done. I have written over 100 articles where each one has at least 1000 words.

My grammar is not perfect, but I am much better than before. If you keep on with it, you will get better and that is a fact.

  5. I’ve been toying with the idea of starting up some sort of blog for a while now but I’m not completely sure about my writing skills. I can write but I’m unsure how ‘friendly I can be with my writing? How long did you go for before you got comfortable with the whole content thing?

    1. Hey Chris, writing certainly did not come “naturally” to me. Luckily, there are a lot of tools that can help you along the way. For starters, I recommend reading a lot, if you are not already doing so, particularly about whatever you plan on being the subject of your writing. Second, plan your article out. Create high level ideas you want to include as sort of subtopics of your article. Then just write, but don’t publish. You may go through several iterations before you are finally happy.

Your writing will evolve over time. Don’t stress over it. Have fun with it and you will be a wiz in no time.

  6. I agree with what you say when it come to blogging, their are many people in the world wh are just waitng to get their hands on the kind of infomation that we have and the good part is that we can use what we have and create a full time job that comes with so much wonderful benefits. Thanks for sharing this most helpful infomation I am most sure that those who visit your site and see you you make this all so good by breaking this type of work down will be more than happy to give it a try. All the best to you and have a good day.
