Work From Home

home-officePeople ask me all the time,  if it is possible to earn a decent living working for yourself online. The simple answer is yes you can, but it is going to require work. A lot people are looking for a quick, easy fix to a financial situation. This aint it. If you decide to work from home you are going to work hard if you want to see any real success.

But remember what we say at Sucker Free Business Online. Hard work does not have to be hard. I’m here to help.

Why should I want to work from home?

There are a lot of reasons for me. First and foremost, I want to be able to spend time with my family. My daily routine usually allows me to cook dinner. I love cooking and my wife is grateful that I can take that off of her plate.

I’m also able to spend much more time with my kids. I’m almost always home when the leave for school and home when they return. That is a stark contrast to the grind I used to bare of battling traffic for hours to get to an office, work 9 or so hours and battle hours of traffic to get home.

I want to be able to work when I want. If I want to take a few hours off to go have lunch with my dad, I can. I don’t stress over scheduling doctor appointments during the day. I work when I want.

work-at-the-beachI want to be able to work where I want. All I need is an internet access point and I’m able to work. It’s as simple as that. I can go to the beach or to the mountains. I can travel and spend extended visits with friends and family. All I need is a trusty internet connection and I’m golden.

I have helped mentor people that have had disabilities that prevented them from doing a regular 9 to 5 job. Online opportunities allows them to be able to earn a good living while working from home.

If you want to work from home, how do you start?

It all starts with a business idea and a website. If you have not read it yet, I suggest your go read my article on how to create a website for free. It goes over selecting what your business will be (your niche) and tells you step by step how to create your website.

You need to create content.

blogOnce you have your website built you need to start creating your content. Remember that hard work I was talking about before? This is where it comes in.

You need to start researching content relevant to your niche and writing about it. There is a method to this and it is covered very nicely at Wealthy Affiliate.

It’s not quite as simple as just writing out some webpages. The training at wealthy affiliate will teach you how to make beautiful content that will get noticed by search engines. The methods shown there are tried and true and are working for a lot of people just like you.

You definitely do not want to steal content form other sites. We refer to that as “scraped content”. That is a huge no-no and will likely get you whacked with a big fat ban stick from the search engines. That would mean nobody would be able to find your website and if nobody can find your website you cannot make money off of it. Web traffic = money.

How much content do I need to create?

You will need to create a lot of content, but your work should be spread out. What you want to do is add content on a regular basis to your website. I usually recommend that people create two pages of content (blog posts) per week. That is an easily attainable goal for most people.

The thing you don’t want to do is create 7 pages of content every week for a month then not create any content for a month. You need to be consistent in your posting. Search engines have algorithms that crawl your pages and check for updated content. If you are not creating content regularly you will lose ranking.

It takes me, on average, about an hour to create one quality blog post. Everyone is different, though. You may be able to do it faster or it may take you a little longer.

I can’t think of what to write about.

In the beginning this should in no way be an issue for you. You should have selected a topic that interests you and something you either know a lot about or can learn a lot about. You want to be a subject matter expert in your niche.

However, we all get writer’s block from time to time. There are several ways to combat this and here are a few.

  • Write extra content when you are extra inspired and save for later.
  • Search your niche and harvest ideas from what others are writing about.
  • Visit web forums and see what questions people are asking. Answer them in your content.
  • Talk to a friend about your niche and get ideas from them.
  • Email me

But what if I fail?

blind-failureThere is one common thing that I can say about everyone who has failed in establishing a lucrative online business. They quit before they succeeded.

You are probably new at this and you have a lot to learn. Heck, I’ve been at it for 8 years and I still have a lot to learn. The good news is that there are great resources that I can show you to get you going. You just need to not quit.

But Rome was not built in a day. Your online business will not be either. This is going to be something you are going to work at for a while.

The thing is, I want you to succeed. Your success is a direct reflection of me, but you have to do the lion’s share of the work. Just remember, it should be fun. If it is not, you need to rethink your niche.

briefcase-full-of-moneyWhen will I start making money?

You should expect your first briefcase stuffed with cash to arrive at your house within three business minutes of the launch of your brand new website that nobody has ever heard of. There will also be world peace and an end to homelessness and hunger.

The only thing I can say about when you will start making money with absolute certainty is, “I don’t know.”

I was just talking to a young lady yesterday who made her first conversion (money from her online business). She had been at it for a whopping 4 days. So it is possible you could start making money right away, but I would caution you that it is highly unlikely.

It took me about six months before I saw my first dollar of revenue from an online business. And even that was pence. I had worked so hard that I did not know if I should laugh or cry. Success does not cover overnight, but if you are diligent and learn the right way to do things (and continue learning) success cannot evade you. I did it the wrong way so you don’t have to. I’m a sucker, remember?

Work from home.

Did you think of your niche? Did you create your free website? If not, what are you waiting for? Success wants to be found. Isn’t it about time you built your own wealth instead of building someone else’s?

Remember, I’m hear to help. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Please leave me a comment or question below.

  1. I want to add something for people who want to try to make their own website… Don’t wait for inspiration, just write! And when you start writing about whatever is your niche, thoughts, titles, headings everything will come… Just write it down… Hope this will help someone…

    1. Great advice, Sasa. But I’d follow that up with don’t publish just anything. You don’t want content for content’s sake. You want quality content that will engage your reader. Sometimes if you just sit down and start writing if you are feeling uninspired, inspiration will start to flow. I completely agree with that statement.

Also, if you want to be a good writer you should read a lot. I got that advice from one of my mentors early on when I first started writing. Reading really does make you a better writer.

  2. Very honest and genuine article. You highlighted each and every reason why I want to work from home. Flexibility and quality time with family. Most site I’ve been to, guarantee that within 3 months, you will get you first paycheck. I’m glad you said that you don’t know because you’re right, who could really guarantee that. Thank you for offering your help and not demanding a subscription.

I will also implement your advise on 2 posts per week. When feeling inspired, I will keep that idea and expand my notes for future posts. 6 months, I still have a way to go but am encouraged that I’ll see something once I put in the work. Great article. Will share to my networks.

    1. Thanks, Drew. Remember, if you are using WordPress for your content management you can create drafts. I use this for several things, including writing articles to post at a later date.

I usually actually write three or four articles (blog posts) and will post two and bank the remaining. I then have them ready to go if I’m too busy one week or if I want to take a vacation and not worry about keeping my content current I can schedule them to post.

If you look under the “Publish” widget when you’re editing a post you will see that you can change the date from “Publish Immediately” to a future date. That is a very handy tool.

  3. 4 days?? Wow!!! How I wish I could switch lives with her…hahahaha. But yes quite honestly, the honest answer really is “I don’t know”. But everything gets there with persistence and hard work. Love how you wrote this Christian, honest and endearing. Made me wanna sign up somewhere 🙂 If you’re reading this, go ahead and sign up somewhere…you won’t regret it.

    1. Thanks, May. I was reluctant to publish about my friend who made a conversion after only four days. That can be misleading and I don’t want anyone to have that expectation.

And yes everyone should get rolling on a website if they are interested in making money online. My number one recommendation is Wealthy Affiliate for that.
